In recent years, prior to my purchase of AnimEigo, Robert and Natsumi were pioneers in the use of crowdfunding to integrate fan input and support with their releases. It was a great system, but it had one big limitation: it only worked on shows where they could get a lot of bonus features and participation of the original creators.

This is very seldom possible in the anime world, and indeed, the only reason they were able to make it happen is because they had been an intergral part of the scene for so long, and the shows they were releasing were largely created by people they knew very well. This got them access well beyond what would be possible for most foreign publishers. By the end of their run, they were out of shows to which they could give such a royal treatment.

There might be a way for us to do a normal "Kickstarter" type crowdfunded release someday, but it would have to be something very specific, and it wouldn't be soon. In the mean time, we thought it would be nice to have fans who really want to support what we're doing to have a say in things, and to have more intimate communication. There are a lot of silly little by-products that come up in our day to day production that don't really warrant putting on a disc or online anywhere, but can now have a home.

This is just the start – we plan on growing our member sections to include a lot of cool stuff, once the numbers start going up enough to justify additional expenses.
